In April of this year, Beyoncé shook the world with the release of her album/film lemonade. At first, people were living for the fact that there was a new Beyoncé album. Then they cried because there was a new Beyoncé album. Then they made memes because there was a new Beyoncé album AND a movie they could make GIFs out of.
However, after the initial hysteria died down, people began to dig deeper into the meaning of the song’s lyrics and accompanying music videos. One particular point of contention was the identity of “Becky,” you know, the one with the “nice hair.”
The internet and the Beyhive were quick to pounce on Rachael Roy, who according to gossip sites and Twitter was having an alleged affair with Beyoncé’s husband Jay Z. This also led to some confusion about Rachael Ray, the TV chef, and Rachael Roy. Yuck! Rumors also circulated that “Becky” was actually singer and model Rita Ora, who was in a relationship with Jay. There were also theories about the meaning of “Becky with the nice hair.”
Basically, Becky was a complete mystery… until now.
In an interview with Weekly entertainmentDiana Gordon, a staff member and songwriter at Lemonade, including the song “Sorry,” which includes the line “Becky,” exposes the whole thing.
I laughed, like that was silly. “Where do we live?” she said when I asked her about the line. I was like, “What era did you get all this information from that lyric?” “Does it really tell you that much when you accuse people?”
Hmmm… interesting. So actually the line isn’t to blame at all. It’s literally just a lyric in the song.
Gordon went on to explain that although she had not explicitly spoken to Beyoncé about the reaction to the lyrics, she was sure that Beyoncé was completely baffled by the whole thing.
“The idea came into my head, but it no longer belongs to me,” she said. “It was very funny and amusing for me to see it spread around the world. If it’s not me saying it and the only person in the world who can say it is Beyoncé, then I’m damn happy.”
It seems we can finally put this madness behind us. It’s never cool to attack people on social media, and online bullying is not okay.
In the same interview, Gordon talked about how the song “Daddy Lessons” came about, and it’s actually pretty amazing. Although the song is obviously very personal to Beyoncé, it actually started as a fantasy.
“I didn’t have a father as a child, so ‘Daddy Lessons’ was more of a fantasy for me,” she explained. “I felt like I helped a lot in raising my brothers and sisters, but this was really their story.”
So let’s put all this Becky nonsense to rest, shall we?
