Wayne Rooney put his body on the line to help DC United beat Colorado Rapids, scoring his first goal for the club since moving to the United States.
England’s all-time leading goalscorer is starting a new chapter of his MLS career across the pond and had an eventful evening with his new club on Saturday.
Rooney beat his former Manchester United teammate Tim Howard to give his team the lead at Audi Field, with DC winning the match 2-1 thanks to a last-minute own goal.
A mistake from Niki Jackson gave United the win, but the team had to fight hard to cross the finish line and secure only their second victory since May 19.
Defending a last-minute corner with the bottom of the MLS Eastern Conference under intense pressure, United had to recall all of their players to keep Colorado out.
Rooney was never one to shy away from his defensive duties, despite playing at the top of the field and the former England captain being at the heart of the action.
But unfortunately for the Liverpool player, he was caught between two Rapids players and fell to the ground with his face in his hands.

The full extent of the injury became clear when the television cameras focused on the striker as he stood up.
Blood was pouring from the stocky striker’s face and he required medical attention to repair a broken nose that had caused him to leave the field with a burgundy tint.
DC United manager Ben Olsen said: “I don’t think this is the first time he’s bled in a game. He’s a tough guy and I think he’ll shake it off.”

“He’s been fantastic in every way we want to see him in this group – with his leadership and his ability to score goals. Hopefully it can continue to get better.”
United remain bottom of the table while Rooney, who is used to winning titles in Manchester, is fighting to take his side further up the table.
