His joke had a double meaning.
When Minnesota Governor Tim Walz shared the stage with Kamala Harris at their first rally as official running mate, he certainly had plenty to say about Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance. Now that the two are taking opposing positions, Walz has wasted no time in positioning himself against the senator, comparing their experiences as men from “small-town America” and expressing his desire for a debate.

In doing so, however, Walz made a comment that sent the crowd wild – although some viewers may have been confused. What did he mean when he said he hoped JD Vance would “get up off the couch” to debate him?

Tim Walz wants JD Vance to “get off the couch.”
During the portion of his speech about Vance, Walz said, “I have to tell you, I can’t wait to debate the guy…if he’s willing to get off the couch and show up.” The crowd went wild at that, but some weren’t sure what he meant exactly. Has Vance expressed hesitation about debating Walz in the past? Is he lazy? Why doesn’t he get off the couch?
Well, it turns out his joke was referring to a meme surrounding JD Vance that claims the Senator had an intimate relationship with his couch cushions. It comes from a tweet claiming Vance wrote a passage in his memoir: Hillbilly Elegyin which he describes the experience in detail – which of course never happened. At least as far as we know.
And don’t even get us started on the double meaning of “get off” – we don’t think that’s what Walz intended, but the added, X-rated layer of the joke certainly didn’t go unnoticed by social media users.
“Tim Walz really went all out, bragging about leading a high school football team from a winless record to state champions, saying he’s willing to debate JD Vance, and basically calling him a couch fucker. He’s all in,” said one X user.
