The back-to-school shopping season is in full swing, and this weekend shoppers can expect extra savings as the state holds annual sales tax exemptions.
Under Texas law, most clothing, shoes, school supplies and backpacks that cost less than $100 each are exempt from sales tax during the holiday – that is, no tax is charged on these items. School uniforms, nursing uniforms, police uniforms, firefighter uniforms, military uniforms, postal uniforms and uniforms for other professions are tax-free this weekend.
Rented uniforms remain subject to tax, and the tax relief does not extend to certain items such as jewelry, handbags and luggage.
The government list of tax-free and taxable items can be found here.
Qualified items may be purchased in person at a Texas store or from an online or catalog retailer with a place of business in Texas.
Tax-free shopping begins at 00:01 on Friday 9 August and ends at midnight on Sunday 11 August.
Shoppers can expect to save about $8 per $100.
How to save money on back-to-school shopping
According to the Better Business Bureau, there are ways for shoppers to save money during tax-free weekends and beyond.
Take a look around your home. You will be surprised at the supplies you already have stored in cupboards and drawers.
Ask about student discounts at the checkout, as there are often hidden discounts that are not advertised.
Consider buying in bulk. All you need is a friend in the neighborhood who has a Sam’s Club or Costco membership. Consider pooling your money and saving big. Laptops and electronics are often cheaper at big department stores, too.
