In case you haven’t heard, Drake posted 100 gigabytes of content online on Tuesday. The second folder contains a video clip in which Drake, 40, and some friends discuss when to expect Jay-Z’s last-minute verse, “Talk Up,” from the Toronto rapper’s fifth solo album. Scorpio.
Apparently, Jay was on tour with his wife Beyoncé and planned to record and submit his verse at the venue afterward. In the clip, Drake tells 40 that he plans to take a quick two-hour power nap so he can be there in case the veteran rapper has any questions or concerns.
Journalist Elliott Wilson posted the clip on his Instagram, and Jay’s longtime DJ and sound engineer Young Guru decided to give fans in the comments the backstory on how they managed to get the verse to Drake in time.
Guru’s evening was quite hectic, as he had to DJ during the show, set up a makeshift studio at the venue on the fly, and was late for a party he had booked for months in advance. This is how he remembers the evening:
We’re on (the On the Run II tour). Remember, I’m the DJ. Hov approached me and just said, “Set up a studio in the venue.” I’m like, “What?” But of course I can do it. We go out and do a two-hour show.
Mind you, he has to memorize every verse from every album. No backing tracks. I’m a DJ, I can’t miss a cue or (musical director Omar Edwards) would kill me. We finish the show. We go back to the room to finish the verse, but the problem is I have an after-party. I can’t (remember) what city or what country in Europe, but understand, my parties were planned months before the tour.
The promoter waited in the parking lot for two hours and I can’t tell him why I’m late. By the time Hov finished, the internet that we had set up through Live Nation was gone. Everyone was gone. I had to hook my phone up to my computer to send the session to (Drake’s producer Noah “40” Shebib). I made it to the club just in time for my set.
When you all listen to this piece I sometimes wonder if you understand how much work goes into it!!!! Classic nights!!!! And I rocked my set lol.
