10 things you should know on your first day of school

The start of a new semester is often full of firsts: finding a new class, navigating campus for the first time, getting to know the city and surrounding area, and more. Whether you’re new to the university or returning, CU Denver is here to help you prepare and feel excited. We’ve put together a list of back-to-school tips to keep in mind on the first day of classes on Monday, August 19.

1. There are numerous ways to get to and from campus.

Our central downtown location means you have multiple options for getting to and from campus and exploring the city we call home. RTD, the city’s public transportation system, is conducting maintenance through September that will impact many routes, so plan ahead to ensure you have the most hassle-free way to get to campus. You can also try other methods, such as biking (there are covered bike shelters on campus), driving and parking, walking, scootering, or skateboarding.

2. Go to the Tivoli Student Union to pick up your CU Denver ID card and textbooks.

Your safety is important to us, so we ask all students, faculty, and staff to wear a Lynx ID card in a visible location while on campus. You can wear it around your neck with a lanyard and ID holder, or attach it to your clothing with a retractable ID holder. If you need an ID card, go to the ID Station in the Tivoli Student Union. While you’re there, stop by the Tivoli Station Bookstore, where you’ll find notebooks, textbooks, supplies, CU Denver merchandise, and more.

3. Keep these resources to support mental health and well-being.

The health and well-being of our campus community is our highest priority. We have resources and services that can help. CU Denver’s Counseling Center offers a free initial consultation and up to 10 individual sessions per calendar year. For additional resources, visit these websites and contact numbers.

4. There are numerous places on campus for studying, socializing and eating.

There are many hotspots on campus for reading, relaxing, hanging out with friends, or recharging your batteries. Learn more about some of our favorite spots here. If you’re looking for social activities, there are more than 100 student organizations at CU Denver. Learn more about them here.

5. The heat is strong, protect yourself.

If this is your first time in Denver, be prepared for heat. The city sits at an elevation of 5,200 feet (hence the nickname “Mile High City”), which means the sun can be very strong. If you’re walking to and from classes or exploring your surroundings, use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and drink water.

6. Feel like an adventure? The wellness center is just the thing for you.

One of the many benefits of studying at CU Denver is easy access to some of the state’s greatest adventures. If you need help getting started, the Student Wellness Center’s Outdoor Adventure program offers a climbing wall, guided tours, rental equipment and a bike shop.

7. From galleries to installations, there is no shortage of art experiences.

The Auraria campus is a hive of creativity, from striking sculptures to vibrant murals and unique figurines, many of which were created by CU Denver’s own students and faculty. Here’s how to create your own art walk on campus.

8. Curious about a topic? You can take a course outside your major.

At CU Denver, you can choose the path that works best for you. That means you can take courses on subjects that interest you or pursue certificates, licenses and certifications.

9. If you need a 3D printer, visit the Auraria Library’s Innovation Garage.

If you need resources for class or extracurricular hobbies, look no further than Auraria Library’s Innovation Garage. The space features a 3D printer, poster printer, vinyl cutter, and sewing machine.

10. Take a short walk to Denver’s famous Larimer Square.

There’s a lot to explore in our hometown, but one of Denver’s iconic historic districts is just a short walk down Speer Boulevard. Larimer Square is decorated with hanging flags (a great photo opportunity) and is home to unique dining options like an ice cream shop and boutique shops.
