100 years for a Green Card? Indian engineer warns students: “Don’t come to the USA”

An Indian-origin software engineer living in Texas has warned students against coming to the US to study. Suren says that after completing their education, chasing H1B visas becomes a full-time job. In his post on Twitter, he further says that the problem does not end there as the waiting period for a green card is 100 years.

In his response to a post by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, he spoke about the issues facing Indian students. In a video, the ambassador can be seen talking about the Education USA Fairs taking place across India. His post reads, “Students and parents, I am so excited to invite you to our #EducationUSA Fairs taking place across India this month.”

“This is your chance to meet representatives from more than 80 U.S. universities and learn about admissions, scholarships, and more.”

Suren’s X-bio reads: “GenAI for software development, open source, chef, rants about H1B and green cards in the US. Apolitical critic.” In his post, he wrote: “Please don’t come to the #USA. These are lies. You don’t believe me? Talk to anyone who has come here to study in the last decade.”

He then listed the problems faced in the United States. He wrote, “Your dreams will be shattered” and “After completing your education, there is no future.”

Regarding visas and green cards, he wrote: “You will spend your entire career chasing H1B visas. For Indians, the wait for a green card is about 100 years.”

Internet users react

Several people agreed with Suren on the issue of H1B visa and green card.

One of the users wrote: “Yes. That’s right. One day I asked my colleague who is on an H1 visa when he will become a US citizen. I was shocked to learn that the waiting list is 100 years long.”

Another user named Satya opined that it is much better for today’s youth to work in India. “Intelligent people with good education and talent will have more opportunities in India in the next decade or so. Waiting for a GC in the US is horrible! It’s not worth it unless you are going there only for the reasons mentioned above. Immigration is a big problem now more than ever, especially for ‘legal immigrants’.”

One user wrote that Indians live in fear of losing their jobs. “The Indians who are now planning to come to the US for higher studies will be extending their H1B visas all their lives and will always be at risk of losing their jobs. No green card for Indians.”
