1994 Score Series 1 Baseball Box Break, Review and Breakdown

In 1994, Score Baseball was split into two series, each with a base Checklist of 330 cards. The base design is pretty simple, with blue borders and a nameplate in the team’s color. Love it! There was a complete Checklist parallel set, Gold Rush, which changed the card borders to gold and added a gold hue to the entire card.

As for the inserts, there are only two to look for in this box. Gold Stars are limited to 6,500 each and you should expect to find a few in each box. The more difficult insert, Dream Team, is only included once in every other box. These have an old-fashioned look and feature players in retro jerseys.

Highlights of Package 1:

Albert Belle, Orel Hershiser, Robin Yount and David McCarty Gold Rush (one per pack)

Package 2:

Jeff Bagwell & Tino Martinez Gold Rush

The base cards seemed to survive the bricking in these old packs. The Gold Rush parallels, however, took the most damage.

Package 3:

Roger Clemens, Ryne Sandberg & Jim Thome Gold Rush

Package 4:

Rickey Henderson, Fernando Valenzuela, Tom Glavine, Paul O’Neill, Will Clark and Luis Aquino Gold Rush

Henderson looks strange in the Blue Jays uniform. He only played 44 games for Toronto.

Package 5:

Fred McGriff, Goose Gossage, Mark Grace and Kirby Puckett Gold Rush

Package 6:

Carlos Baerga, Omar Vizquel, Wally Joyner, Joe Carter and John Jaha Gold Rush

Package 7:

Barry Bonds, Mike Timlin Gold Rush and Brett Butler Gold Stars (1:18 packages)

Package 8:

Mark Langston, Dennis Eckersley, Chuck Knoblauch & Jose Lind Gold Rush

Ready for your close-up, Eck?

Package 9:

Roberto Alomar, Don Mattingly, Ken Griffey, Jr. and Brent Gates Gold Rush

I love the picture of Griffey’s bunting here. How many times do you think he did that? He only managed eight sacrifice bunts in his career.

Package 10:

Craig Biggio, Jose Rijo, Jim Abbott and Jeff Branson – Gold Rush

Package 11:

Lenny Dykstra, Cal Ripken, Jr., Gary Sheffield and Frank Thomas Gold Rush

Package 12:

Lee Smith, Moises Alou, Vinny Castilla, Jimmy Key and Mark Portugal Gold Rush

Cool shot of Moises – if you ignore the fact that his eyes are closed.

Package 13:

Ramon Martinez, John Kruk, Andres Galarraga, Tony Gwynn and Eduardo Perez Gold Rush

Package 14:

Roger Clemens, Ryne Sandberg and Kevin Brown Gold Rush

Package 15:

Jamie Moyer, Frank Thomas, Kirby Puckett, Tino Martinez and Darren Holmes Gold Rush

This Moyer image could almost pass as a short print of a Topps variant.

Package 16:

Brett Butler, Darren Daulton, Eric Karros and Bob Patterson Gold Rush

Package 17:

Mike Greenwell, Mo Vaughn and Jose Canseco Gold Rush

Jose as a pitcher? Yes! Jose only pitched one inning in his career and allowed three earned runs on two hits and three walks.

Package 18:

Bret Saberhagen, Dave Stewart, Jim Thome, Curt Schilling & Jim Leyritz Gold Rush

Package 19:

Will Clark, Paul O’Neill, Tom Glavine and Chicago White Sox Gold Rush

These team stadium cards serve as team checklist cards on the back.

Package 20:

John Olerud, Dante Bichette, Doc Gooden, Lou Whitaker Gold Rush & New York Yankees

Package 21:

Juan Gonzalez, Randy Johnson, Kenny Rogers, Carlos Baerga and Willie Blair Gold Rush

Package 22:

Vinny Castilla, Steady Eddie Murray, Lee Smith and Anthony Young Gold Rush

Package 23:

Lou Whitaker, Wade Boggs, Kevin Brown, Jose Canseco, Kenny Lofton, Lofton Gold Rush and John Burkett Gold Stars (1:18 packages)

Lofton, on the other hand, made quite a few bunts. He finished his career with 72 sacrifice bunts. Undoubtedly, he had his fair share of bunt singles as well.

Package 24:

Rick Aguilera, Barry Larkin, Matt Williams, Boston Red Sox and John Franco Gold Rush

Package 25:

Eddie Murray, Kevin Mitchell, Jeff Bagwell and Todd Jones Gold Rush

Package 26:

Goose Gossage, Kirby Puckett, Tino Martinez, Frank Thomas and Gregg Jefferies Gold Rush

Package 27:

Jimmy Key, Rickey Henderson and Gene Harris Gold Rush

Package 28:

Goose Gossage, Mark Grace & Tom Gordon Gold Rush

Package 29:

Omar Vizquel, Joe Carter, Mark Whiten and Wade Boggs Gold Rush

On September 7, 1993, Whiten hit four home runs. He also had 12 RBIs in that game.

Package 30:

Barry Bonds and Ryan Bowen Gold Rush

Package 31:

Mike Mussina, Ivan Rodriguez, Brian Jordan, Baltimore Orioles and Milwaukee Brewers Gold Rush

Package 32:

Ken Griffey, Jr., Don Mattingly, Otis Nixon and Mike Mussina Gold Rush

Package 33:

Craig Biggio, Jose Rijo and Milt Thompson Gold Rush

Package 34:

Gary Sheffield, Cal Ripken, Jr. and Damon Berryhill Gold Rush

Package 35:

John Olerud, Lee Smith, Dante Bichette, Vinny Castilla, Moises Alou and Travis Fryman Gold Rush

Package 36:

Albert Belle, Orel Hershiser, Fred McGriff and Mel Rojas Gold Rush

And finally, the back of the Albert Belle card. Belle was just beginning to establish his dominance in the 90s.

Aside from the surface damage to the cards, this was still a fun early 90’s break. There are a handful of great photo selections. Unfortunately, the Gold Stars included in this box weren’t that great and there was no Dream Team insert. Maybe it’s worth another try if I can find a cheap enough box.
