26-year-old man from Center Point shot by police after chase

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Alabama – A Center Point man was shot and killed by police officers Tuesday afternoon after he led officers on a chase through east Birmingham while brandishing a firearm, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

At approximately 2:15 p.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers attempted to stop a Dodge Challenger for a traffic violation near 1st Avenue North and 56th Street North.

The driver of the Challenger reportedly refused to stop and a chase ensued.

During the pursuit, the suspect collided with several officer vehicles, but no injuries were reported.

The suspect drove in the wrong direction, eventually reaching Exit 129 on Interstate 20/59 at Messer Airport Highway and crashed.

According to ALEA, the suspect, identified as 26-year-old Demarcos Javonte Mcalpine of Center Point, exited the wrecked vehicle and pulled out a firearm.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s officers then shot Mcalpine, who was injured by the gunfire and taken to UAB Hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.

No officers were injured during the pursuit or shooting, and no other injuries were reported.

At the request of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, ALEA’s State Bureau of Investigation has opened an investigation into a police officer-involved shooting.
