27 animals rescued from the home of an animal hoarder

Thanks to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL), 27 animals are currently recovering from a Wayne County animal shelter.

On Wednesday, members of the ARL, along with police officers, entered a small house where they found 22 dogs, four parrots and a donkey outside in a makeshift doghouse.

The dogs were crammed into the overcrowded room, barking, their fur covered in mats and feces.

The four parrots were found in dirty cages.

The donkey’s enclosure was so small that he could only move a few steps in each direction.

ARL reports that most of the dogs suffered from severe matting, overly long nails and serious dental problems.

One of the parrots is suffering from old injuries. Another was unfortunately in such a bad physical condition that it could not be saved.

“This is another tragic case of animal and human suffering that we see far too often,” said Tom Colvin, CEO of ARL. “Unfortunately, it is the innocent animals who end up in these difficult situations. We are relieved that the animals are now receiving the care they deserve and we hope that the people affected also get the support they need to break the cycle of those who harbor too many animals.”

The Animal Rescue League of Iowa is Iowa’s largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year.
