30 schools in New Hanover County are eligible for free breakfast and lunch through the USDA program

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Students at 30 schools in the New Hanover County School District are eligible for free breakfast and lunch this school year through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision.

“The CEP identifies high-poverty schools and reimburses districts for the cost of providing free, nutritious meals to students. Families are not required to complete a meal subsidy application for students attending a CEP school, eliminating a potential barrier to receiving free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at school,” the NHCS said in a statement.

The qualified schools are located throughout the county and serve over 11,600 students, or about 45 percent of all students enrolled in the district.

“When students are adequately nourished, they are ready to learn,” said Amy Stanley, director of child nutrition at NHCS. “We know that for some of our students, the meals they receive at school are the most important and nutritious meals of the day. We are so grateful to be able to support their learning and development with the meals we serve.”
