5 things you need to know

CENTRAL MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Good morning, Central Michigan! Happy Thursday, the weekend is just around the corner! Check out these five stories we’re following right now.

1 McLaren Health Care confirmed the technical outage was caused by a criminal cyberattack on Wednesday, August 7. Patients told WNEM-TV5 of problems including canceled appointments, difficulty obtaining prescriptions and employees who said they did not come into work all week and were told to take paid leave for the time off.

2 The Saginaw Intermediate School District is holding open interviews to fill vacancies before the new school year. Bus drivers, teachers and more are needed. A job fair will be held on Monday, August 12, seeking lead and assistant teachers for preschool and Head Start. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Claytor Preschool.

3 The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is hosting a virtual open house to showcase plans to demolish and rebuild the Lafayette Street Bridge in Bay City. The $112 million project will begin this fall after Henry and Wenona Streets are repaved. The virtual open house will be held from 6 to 7 p.m.

4 The NCAA imposes a penalty on former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh. The four-year show-cause order bars him from college football until August 2028. The NCAA said Harbaugh “failed to create an atmosphere of compliance with the rules and violated his responsibilities as a head coach.” They said Harbaugh behaved unethically and failed to cooperate when he denied his involvement. This penalty only applies if he returns to college football in the next four years.

5 Celebrate culture and rich history in Saginaw. It’s almost time for one of the city’s longest-running events celebrating its diversity. The 56th annual African Cultural Festival kicks off Friday. Support local businesses and entrepreneurs with plenty of vendors in food, fashion, beauty, wellness, design, arts and crafts. Learn more here.
