5 things you should know about new Vikings quarterback Brett Rypien

Here are five things you should know about the Vikings’ new quarterback.

1. Nephew of the Super Bowl MVP

Rypien’s uncle is Mark Rypien, who was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXVI after helping Washington defeat Buffalo 37-24 on January 26, 1992.

Interestingly, this Super Bowl was played at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.

Mark Rypien played 14 seasons in the NFL and was a two-time Super Bowl champion (he also helped Washington win Super Bowl XXII over the Broncos), was twice named Second-Team All-Pro by The Associated Press and was nominated twice for the Pro Bowl (1989 and 1991).

2. Former Boise State star

Rypien attended Boise State, his first time as a Bronco, and finished his college career as the Mountain West’s all-time record holder in passing yards (13,581), completions (1,036) and 300-yard passing games (21). He also became Boise State’s all-time record holder in 300-yard games, passing Kellen Moore, who had 16 such games from 2008-11.

Rypien was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in 2018. He was named the Mountain West Championship Offensive MVP in 2017 after throwing for 256 yards (longest of 59) in a win over Fresno State. He then had 362 passing yards and two touchdowns in the Las Vegas Bowl against Oregon.
