5,000 Membership Rewards when you purchase gift cards valued over 0

There’s a new targeted Amex offer where you’ll get 5,000 Membership Rewards points back when you purchase over $500 in Delta gift cards. The 5,000 MR bonus is worth $55 when paid out via a Schwab American Express, or ~$78 when using our fair Amex point redemption values.

We’ve found this offer on several of our MR earning cards and the fact that it’s specifically geared toward gift card purchases makes redeeming the offer extremely easy.

The deal

  • Targeted Amex offer for 5,000 Membership Rewards back on purchases made with Delta gift cards valued over $500. Registration is required and gift cards must be purchased at delta.com/giftcards/amex.
  • Purchase must be completed by 09/22/24.

Key terms

  • The offer must first be added to the card and then the same card can be used to redeem.
  • Only American Express® cards issued in the U.S. and enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of purchase are eligible.
  • Limit of 1 registered card per cardmember across all American Express offer channels. Your registration of an eligible American Express card for this offer is valid only for that card.
  • QUALIFIED PURCHASES: Offer valid online only on delta.com/giftcards/amex for purchases of eGifts and physical Gift Cards.
  • Not valid on purchases shipped outside the U.S.
  • Additional points will be credited to your Membership Rewards program account within 90 days of 9/22/2024, provided American Express receives information from the merchant regarding your qualifying purchase. EARNING POINTS: Limit of 1 registered card per American Express Card online account.
  • Limit of 5,000 additional Membership Rewards points per cardholder.

Short thoughts

Typically, Delta Amex offers are geared toward purchasing airline tickets directly from Delta, so many people have to try to find ways to apply them to gift cards or a future flight credit to take advantage of the savings from the offer. This offer is much simpler because it’s geared specifically toward purchasing gift cards.

The offer is valid for purchases of $500 or more, but it goes without saying that there is absolutely no reason to buy more than the $500 required to trigger the offer. Instead of the normal 10-20% cashback on these offers, the bonus comes in the form of Membership Rewards. Depending on whether they are cashed out or transferred to partners, 5,000 MR will result in around 10-15% cashback on a $500 gift card.

Officially, the offer is valid until 9/22, but Delta offers almost always have a maximum redemption limit and often disappear before the expiration date, so if you’re interested in this deal, I advise you to take advantage of it sooner rather than later.

My wife Erin and I were on our first big trip together, around the world in 100 days, our honeymoon, during which I was in a car accident and got a speeding ticket in every country we visited (I think I still have a warrant out for my arrest in New Zealand for not paying the ticket, but that’s between us). We currently live in Washington state, own a winery, ski after work, and hike as much as our old knees allow.
