Summer is coming to an end and airfares to some destinations are falling from their summer highs.

In August 2024, passengers departing from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport will find low base fares to multiple destinations.

According to travel website Hopper, there are six cities with round-trip fares of $60 or less.

The flight prices we found are subject to change. The lowest base fares were found on ultra-low-cost airlines like Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines. Note that these types of airlines charge low base fares with additional fees for seat reservations, carry-on and checked baggage, and other amenities.

Cheapest flights from Phoenix in August 2024

San Jose, California

San Jose, the largest city in Silicon Valley, is at least an 11-hour drive from Phoenix. The cheapest round-trip airfares in August are well under the nearly $180 FuelEconomy.gov calculates for gas costs for a round-trip car trip.

Hopper estimated that airfares between Phoenix and San Jose are as low as $50. The low price for the route coincides with Frontier Airlines resuming flights between the two cities on August 13, three years after the route was discontinued.

The Arizona Republic found round-trip fares starting at $38 for Frontier flights from August 13-20. For most trips this month, prices ranged from $48 to $58.

Las Vegas

The flight from Phoenix to Las Vegas is much shorter than the drive, and base prices for some round-trip flights in August might even be cheaper than a tank of gas.

Hopper predicted round-trip flights from Phoenix to Las Vegas would cost just $56 in August.

On most days in August, especially mid-month, we found fares between $46 and $59 on Frontier Airlines and Spirit Airlines.

Denver

Colorado’s capital is located about 70 miles from the Rocky Mountains and is quite a distance from Phoenix. Denver is about 865 miles away and the drive there takes at least 13 hours. A nonstop flight takes just two hours.

Hopper predicted flights between Phoenix and Denver for just $58 in August.

On most days in August, especially in the second half of the month, we found fares on Frontier between $58 and $63. The cheapest fares occur from August 13-17 and August 20-24.

San Diego

Known for its beaches and zoo, the Southern California city is a popular weekend getaway for Arizona residents and is only a 75-minute flight away, making it attractive for those who want to avoid the 5.5-hour drive or the eight-hour seasonal bus ride.

We found a round-trip flight from Phoenix to San Diego on Frontier for $48, the lowest advertised price for Tuesday-Saturday travel. That’s $10 less than Hopper’s forecasted $58 for San Diego in August.

Los Angeles

Like Vegas, Los Angeles is a popular vacation destination for Arizona residents. The flight takes about 90 minutes, while the drive takes six hours (longer if there is traffic).

Hopper predicted flights between Phoenix and Los Angeles would cost just $58 in August.

Frontier is offering flights between $48 and $58 on a few dates in August. Only a few trips, including one from August 14-17, are available at the lowest base fare round-trip.

City

From Phoenix to Salt Lake City, the drive takes about 10 hours, while the flight takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. Airfares in August are lower than the nearly $160 gasoline cost FuelEconomy.gov estimates for the trip.

Hopper estimated that round-trip airfare from Phoenix to Salt Lake City would cost $59 for travel in August. We found fares between $48 and $59 on Frontier Airlines or for travel on most dates August 17-31.
