72-year-old father charged in fatal shooting of son near Corry PA

CORRY – A 72-year-old Corry-area resident has been charged with shooting his 48-year-old son in the stomach Sunday night during an argument at the father’s Wayne Township home, according to charging documents.

The defendant, Gary S. Hulihan, was arrested after driving his injured son, Patrick A. Hulihan of Michigan, to Corry Memorial Hospital, according to the criminal complaint and probable cause affidavit.

Patrick Hulihan was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:57 p.m. Sunday, the Erie County Coroner’s Office said.

State police questioned Gary Hulihan and learned that a “verbal and physical altercation” occurred between the Hulihans at the father’s residence at 12102 Carter Hill Road, Wayne Township, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the affidavit states.

“During the altercation,” the affidavit states, “Gary Hulihan fired a .40 caliber Glock 22 pistol and struck Patrick Hulihan in the abdomen, killing him.”

Patrick Hulihan lived in Macomb, Michigan, north of Detroit, and was visiting his father, the coroner’s office said. The autopsy was scheduled for noon Monday.

Further charges against the father include grievous bodily harm

Gary Hulihan was charged on Monday with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, discharging a firearm into an inhabited building and recklessly endangering another person.

According to court records, Hulihan is being held without bail at the Erie County Prison on murder charges.

Hulihan’s preliminary hearing is tentatively scheduled for August 26. The case has been assigned to Corry District Judge Denise Buell.

Murder is the third largest in Erie County in 2024

The killing is the third in Erie County this year and the second in the Corry area.

In other cases:

● Kellie A. Hellman, 59, was charged with stabbing her husband, Paul Hellman II, 59, to death on Jan. 19 as he slept in his recliner at their Corry home.

Kellie Hellman is in prison and must undergo court-ordered psychiatric treatment before she faces charges.

● Melvin D. Burnett Jr. is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 35-year-old Deonte Tate of Erie. Tate, 35, shot and killed in the early morning hours of May 7 in the 700 block of West Fourth Street in Erie. Burnett, 34, is also accused of shooting and wounding a woman.

Burnett is being held without bail in the Erie County Prison. His formal arraignment is scheduled for Thursday.
