Friday afternoon: News and notes from the Cardinals

— A thousand excuses for the lack of stuff this week. We’ve been scrambling to get the soon-to-be former CC headquarters on the market. If you want to pay $1.5 million to live in the place where I saw Lamar Jackson jump over the guy from Syracuse, you can now make that happen.

—Louisville football is not represented in the preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll released Monday afternoon. The Cards are second in the “also receiving votes” category.

—Louisville volleyball was picked to finish third in the ACC behind defending champion Pittsburgh and newcomer Stanford. The Cards have four players on the preseason all-conference team.

We will win the conference.

—It was really cool to see members of the Louisville football team at the Dirt Bowl last weekend.

—After making plenty of appearances as a rookie, Stanquan Clark is ready to take the next step as a starter in 2024.

—Former Louisville assistant and current Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore could face significant penalties for his role in the Connor Stallions sign-stealing scandal. An NCAA investigation found that Moore deleted 52 text messages to the Stallions on the day the first report on the scandal was released.

However, for some reason there is a risk that no record will be deleted at all.

—Congratulations to Louisville diver Else Praasterink, who made it to the finals of the 10-meter platform at La Defense Arena at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. She will represent the Netherlands and become the first Louisville Cardinal diver to compete in the Olympics.

—Seems to be good.

—Single game tickets for the upcoming Louisville football season are now on sale.

— Jayden Ulrich, a track and field athlete from Louisville, represented the United States at the Paris Olympics, finishing 18th in the women’s discus. Ulrich is the first Cardinals athlete to ever represent the United States at the Olympics.

—For the first time in 20 years, the United States women’s national soccer team returns to Louisville. The Americans will face Argentina at Lynn Family Stadium on October 30. Full details here.

—The Big X Golf Scramble takes place in three weeks.

—Jack Plummer started the Carolina Panthers’ first preseason game on Thursday. It didn’t go so well.

—yler Shough has the talent needed to take the Cardinals’ downfield passing game to the level coach Jeff Brohm desires, writes CL Brown.

—The first episode of Kasean Pryor and Noah Waterman’s new show is here. Both players say this is the best team they’ve ever played on and that they’ve never had so much fun playing.

—Kelvin Odih, On3’s 53rd basketball recruit for the class of 2025, has narrowed his list to six schools: Louisville, Rutgers, West Virginia, Creighton, Colorado and Oklahoma State.

— According to this ranking, Louisville has the fourth-best pre-football atmosphere in the ACC.

—Virginia Tech quarterback Kyron Drones says the atmosphere at Louisville was the best he played in last year and calls the atmosphere at Florida State “overrated.”

—Pat Kelsey and Jeff Brohm seemed to have had no trouble becoming fast friends.

—Miami quarterback Cam Ward says he is most looking forward to the games against USF and Louisville.

—YaYa Diaby suffered a shock injury during Bucs practice last weekend but appears to be healthy again. Tampa Bay head coach Todd Bowles says the former Cardinal has “unlimited potential.”

—Congratulations to Dana Brown on his official appointment as the new University of Louisiana Basketball SID.

—Recent University of Louisiana Watch List honorees: Pete Nygra on Rimington and Mark Redman on Mackey.

— Led by Quincy Riley, the U of L secondary aims to be the Cardinals’ strongest defense in 2024.

“We want to be the strongest link,” Ellis said. “No weak links, man. No matter who’s out there, there’s no weak links. Whether you’re a freshman, a second year, a fourth year, it really doesn’t matter. There’s no weak links. And whoever’s on the field, our job is to get the job done and make sure we play the best we possibly can. But the thing we just preach is, no links, man. We want to be the biggest. We take that personally, we want to be the strongest link and that also means we have to continue to grow and continue to improve. It doesn’t matter who’s out there.”

Riley returns for his third season with the Cards. He has recorded six interceptions over the past two seasons and has made a number of key interceptions. In 2022, he recorded three interceptions, including a 90-yard touchdown return against Wake Forest. He prevented a potential touchdown when he intercepted a pass near the goal line in the Holiday Bowl loss to USC. The Columbia, South Carolina native is grateful for all the knowledge Ellis brings.

“He’s a tough coach, but he’s full of love,” Riley said of Ellis. “He’s going to push me every day. He’s going to talk to me a lot about the ball and help me become a better player. He knows how to coach me, and that’s one of the reasons I decided to come back.”

— ESPN’s Bill Connelly ranks the 25 most important players in this year’s College Football Playoff race.

—Khani Rooths is still getting used to his new surroundings, but he certainly didn’t look like a newbie in the Bahamas.

—The 502 Circle is always moving.

—The same Bahamas Select team that beat Louisville by 53 lost to Rhode Island by a mere 89-81 on Thursday.

—Tulsa World has an interesting article about Steve Kragthorpe, who passed away earlier this week after battling Parkinson’s disease.

—Scott Radcliff, one of Kragthorpe’s former players at U of L, shared a cool story on Facebook.

— University of Louisiana Athletics has announced a new partnership with Homefield Apparel.

—Texas small forward Shelton Henderson has Louisville on his final list of six schools.

—Louisville is in the top three for highly touted cornerback Ben Hanks Jr. in the class of 2025.

—New University of Louisville running back Donald Chaney has high hopes for University of Louisiana running backs coach Chris Barclay.

— In his final year of college football, Quincy Riley has taken his game to “a new level,” which is a scary thought.

—Antonio Harris, who committed to Louisville, is slated to play cornerback for Jeff Brohm, but in his senior year at Male High School, he’s taking on the challenge of playing quarterback as well.

—Matt McGavic has some notes and observations from Louisville’s fifth open practice.

— After a great summer, Kaden Magwood, a standout basketball player in the class of 2025 and a native of Louisville, plans to take an official visit to U of L later this month.
