Things to do in Philly this weekend – Green Day, Glass Animals, Mamma Mia!, Port Richmond Pierogi Fest, more

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Although it has been a stormy, muggy week in the Philadelphia region, things are set to take a 180-degree turn this weekend, starting Saturday.

That means it’s time to put down the popcorn bowl and cozy blankets and head out the door. Here’s a list of Philadelphia-area events to get your weekend celebrations going.

Green Day at Citizens Bank Park

Ready to rock? Green Day is coming to Citizens Bank Park this Friday. This is part of their The Redeemer Tourand will be joined by special guests The Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and The Linda Lindas. The show starts at 5:30 p.m. and doors open at 4:00 p.m. Tickets start at $35 at Ticketmaster.

Mamma Mia! at the Academy of Music in Philadelphia

Mamma Mia!, a Broadway and film cult classic, is available this week only as part of Ensemble Arts Philly’s Broadway Series at the Academy of Music in Center City.

The four shows will take place on Friday, August 9th at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, August 10th at 2:00 p.m. (limited availability) and 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, August 11th at 1:00 p.m. (limited availability).

Ticket prices start at $26 and go up to $145, fees not included.

Tommy Davidson at the Helium Comedy Club

Popular comedy star Tommy Davidson is at the Helium Comedy Club in Philadelphia all weekend long. The “In Living Color” star will perform in a special three-day event Friday through Sunday.

Known for his wide range of stand-up comedy, acting and music, Davidson is guaranteed to bring his unique blend of humor and talent to the stage.

The star of the “Proud Family” has two shows every day, starting at 7pm and 10pm. The late show on Sunday starts at 9.30pm.

You won’t want to miss seeing this true comedy legend live in action. General admission tickets start at $26.84, with reserved seating available for $39.26.

Glass animals at The Mann

Glass Animals will bring their Tour of Earth to the TD Pavilion at Mann this Saturday. They will be joined by special guest Kevin Abstract. The event starts at 7:45pm and doors open at 6:15pm. The event will take place whatever the weather and proceeds from every ticket will go to War Child UK/Children in Conflict. Tickets start at $93 from Ticketmaster.

Pierogi Festival in Port Richmond

Looking for food and fun? Port Richmond is hosting its 4th annual Pierogi Fest this Saturday. The event features over 100 vendors, live music, kids’ activities, drinks, and of course, authentic Polish cuisine, including many different variations of pierogi. The fest will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on East Thompson Street.

Chinatown Summer Festival

The 2024 Chinatown Summer Festival will take place along 10th and Race Streets from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. The event will feature live performances and dozens of food and craft vendors throughout the day. Festival-goers can also play mahjong, Jenga and ping pong, get face painting or play on a bouncy castle.

Since the return of “The Art of the Brick” exhibition at the Franklin Institute, the humble Lego has been in the spotlight.

The show features more than 100 creations by artist Nathan Sawaya, made entirely from Lego bricks.

Visitors can also view galleries filled with Lego versions of some of the world’s most famous masterpieces, including Van Gogh’s Starry Night and Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. After exploring the exhibition’s galleries, guests can explore an 840-square-meter brick play area and build their own creations using hundreds of thousands of colorful bricks.

The exhibition “Art of the Brick” runs until September 2nd.
