Frenship ISD urges families to apply for free, reduced-price meals this school year

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – “It is painful to even think that children and adults in our community do not know where their next meal is coming from,” said Michelle McCord, superintendent of Frenship ISD.

McCord hopes families will take advantage of the federal free and reduced-price meal program. When applying, several variables, including income, are considered to assess eligibility.

“It’s really important to fill out this form,” McCord said, “because these days, with inflation, food prices and everyone’s tight budgets, it can really help.”

Last year, about 45% of Frenship ISD students qualified for the program. Some families say they are uncomfortable getting help, but McCord says that information is confidential.

“People won’t notice,” McCord said, “and you won’t get any different food than the person right next to you. They just won’t notice.”

McCord adds that receiving these nutritious meals contributes to better students.

“There is so much evidence that a healthy breakfast and a healthy lunch improve children’s educational outcomes,” McCord said.

McCord says the goal is to ensure no student goes without a meal. Families can apply in person or online during the enrollment process, and if your financial circumstances change, you can apply at any time during the school year.

This assistance is available in all districts participating in the USDA National School Lunch Program, including Frenship, Lubbock-Cooper and Shallowater.

The U.S. Department of Education believes that Lubbock ISD serves enough low-income families to receive a Title One designation, which means the school provides free meals to all students.
