After three consecutive dominant gold medal wins at the Olympics, the United States must now settle for the next best thing: a bronze medal against the Netherlands. The Americans have won six of six medals since water polo became an Olympic discipline in 2000: three gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze. The United States lost 6-5 to Australia in a penalty shootout in Thursday’s semifinals, for a bronze medal.
The Netherlands also lost a penalty shootout in the semifinals, eliminating them from the gold medal challenge. They lost 5-4 to Spain on penalties after drawing 14-14 in regulation time. The Netherlands’ only other defeat came on penalties to Australia in Group A, before winning two games in a row to advance to the semifinals.
