Bradford County Commissioners approve providing materials to residents to repair private roads

BRADFORD COUNTY, Fla. (WCJB) – Bradford County residents are unhappy with the condition of a road they use every day to get to and from their homes, and now they’re turning to city officials to do something about it.

“It has been determined that our dirt road is a private dirt road, which is fine with us,” said resident Jessica Saulsby. “But because it is a private dirt road, we cannot hire anyone to take care of the road.”

Residents claim that the condition of SW 112th and SW 113th Avenues has worsened after Hurricane Debby. They say the roads are so unsafe that emergency responders and school buses cannot access the area.

“None of these emergency vehicles, such as large fire trucks or four-by-four ambulances, are allowed in,” said Saulsby. At the end of the meeting, the commissioners made a decision.

“The board concluded that the use of county funds or materials to repair these areas was permissible,” said Bradford County Commissioners Chair Carolyn Brown Spooner.

But the residents have to do the work. The chairman of the County Board Commissioners believes that it should not entail significant costs for the county.

“I don’t know how much money it will cost, but because of the materials we have, the cost of limestone or other materials to repair it shouldn’t be too high,” Brown Spooner said.

“I can tell you that River Bend was heard tonight and they were heard last night. Everyone has come out of their houses and everyone is working together, so I think we have a pretty good chance of getting this done,” Saulsby said.

Residents say they will be at the county yard at 6 a.m. tomorrow to pick up materials for the road work.
