Mayor of Albuquerque wants to reinstate “Better Way Forward” program

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KRQE) – The Better Way Forward program was created in 2015 to help the homeless in the metro, but was shut down largely because of COVID-19. Now Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller wants to revive it with better improvements.

The program provides people living in Gateway Center and Gateway West with jobs cleaning streets and sidewalks in the metro, transportation to and from the job sites, and access to other services such as financial literacy, banking and case management. “This gives them the opportunity to not only get involved quickly, but also take pride in the money they’re making and find a way out of their situation with additional help,” said Gilbert Ramirez, director of the City of Albuquerque’s Department of Health, Housing and Homelessness.

The Duke City Community Ambassadors group will work with homeless people during their work days. The mayor is expected to present the proposal to the Albuquerque City Council later this month.
