Vergil Ortiz Jr. will look to put his previous setbacks behind him when he challenges Serhii Bohachuk for the interim WBC super welterweight title in Las Vegas.
Ortiz (21-0) is coming off a 2-0 loss in 2024 after sitting out due to severe rhabdomyolysis issues. The 2016 Golden Gloves winner is healthy and has a 100% knockout win rate and is looking to make up for lost time.
Everyone expected him to fight for world championship gold. Ortiz is considered the future of the welterweight division and is now moving up to the 154 class, looking forward to making his mark in a new division. An interim victory could lead to a duel against champion Sebastian Fundora or other elite fighters.
“This is the (division) I need to be in,” Ortiz said, via Boxing Scene. “I don’t have to prove anything to anyone. All eyes are on Bohachuk right now. We’re not looking past him at all. We’ve got a big test ahead of us with him, and we’re not worried about anyone else.”

“I think my power is up to 154. I don’t think I’m a devastating knockout puncher. I’ve never seen myself that way. I just pick the right punches and place them in the right place at the right time. That’s all.”
Bohachuk (24-1) won the interim super welterweight title against Brian Mendoza. The Ukrainian has won six fights in a row and hopes to maintain his near-perfect record against Ortiz.
