6 Hair Oils Derms Recommend for Thicker Hair

Whether your hair is thinning or has always been thinning, it’s not uncommon for us to look for ways to add volume to our hair to make it look thicker. Your options are somewhat limited in this area, and many dermatologists recommend a layered approach where you try a few different methods to find what works best for you. If you’re suffering from genetic hair loss, minoxidil (Rogaine) or a stronger supplement may be your best bet. However, hair oils can work as a natural, topical hair thickening aid if you prefer that route.

Hair oils are easy to use: apply them to your scalp, massage them in, let them sit for a bit, then use shampoo and conditioner as usual (most are too thick to leave them in without making your hair look greasy). Some shouldn’t be applied directly to the scalp without using a carrier oil like jojoba, coconut, sweet almond, argan or grapeseed, so check to see if your oil works on its own or needs a helper to tame it.

Here are six of the best hair oils that can lead to thicker, fuller hair and help reverse hair loss after 40.

Marula oil

Marula oil

Marula oil is rich in proteins, fatty acids and antioxidants. It can strengthen hair at the root and follicle, protect against environmental damage and add shine to dry, frizzy hair. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can help with dry scalp and dandruff, both of which can inhibit healthy hair growth. It’s described as lightweight – you may even be able to use it as a finishing oil (a small amount goes a long way).

Is a carrier oil necessary? No. You can apply marula oil alone.

Almonds are not only good for your health, but also for the health of your hair. Almond oil is nourishing, moisturizing and has anti-inflammatory properties. It can improve blood circulation to promote new hair growth when massaged into the scalp and helps reduce hair breakage.

Do you need a carrier oil? No – in fact, almond oil is considered a carrier oil that mixes well with other effective oils.

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil

Jojoba oil is one of the most popular oils for your hair because it contains vitamin E, B-complex vitamins, and zinc – plus plenty of moisture and hydration. This oil can balance the oil levels in your scalp, unclog hair follicles, and strengthen hair.

Does it require a carrier oil? No.

Peppermint oil

Peppermint oil

Looking for a more invigorating oil that you can (literally) feel working its magic on your scalp? Peppermint oil is the perfect choice as it increases circulation, stimulates hair follicles and balances your scalp’s sebum production. Some studies even suggest that peppermint oil increases dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels, a hormone that has been linked to hair loss.

Does it need a carrier oil? Yes, always mix peppermint oil with a carrier oil – it is highly concentrated and can cause skin irritation if not mixed properly with a gentler oil.

Tea tree oil

Similar to peppermint oil, you’ll feel tea tree oil on your scalp thanks to its invigorating, tingling sensation. This oil stimulates hair follicles and has antifungal and antimicrobial benefits. It also unclogs hair follicles to promote growth and can reduce inflammation associated with scalp irritation and hair loss.

Does it require a carrier oil? Yes – always dilute this powerful oil with a carrier oil before use.

Rosemary oil

Rosemary oil

We’ve saved one of the best – if not the best – hair oil for last: rosemary oil. Some studies say rosemary oil can lower DHT levels, preventing hair loss. It has anti-inflammatory properties and can balance the scalp’s sebum production and strengthen hair to minimize breakage. This oil is often added to shampoos marketed for thinning hair – feel free to add a few drops to your shampoo or use it to make a mask or massage oil.

Do you need a carrier oil? Yes – rosemary oil alone can be irritating.
