America’s first jazz dance company starts an ambitious season.
While there is no shortage of entertainment options in the greater Buffalo area when it comes to music and theater, the number of professional dance companies performing locally has not kept pace. That will change this fall when the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts (UBCFA) hosts Giordano Dance Chicago (GDC) for a residency program and a public performance on 19 Septemberth at 19:30
GDC is known for groundbreaking choreography based on the original American art form, jazz. The repertoire includes over 170 works. The company’s influence on jazz dance over six decades is far-reaching. With performances in 28 countries around the world, the company showcases its unique technique and diverse ensemble. This show will delight dance and jazz fans alike.
When we spoke with Executive Director Jamie Enser, she was excited about the ambitious programming that UBCFA is offering in the upcoming season. “With the addition of dance, the center offers the community a truly diverse range of arts and entertainment,” she said.
Guided by the vision of founder Gus Giordano, a pioneer dancer, choreographer, master teacher and founder of the Jazz Dance World Congress, the company continues to honor the past and push the art form forward. Nan Giordano is celebrating her 40th anniversary as artistic director, responsible for commissioning innovative choreographic works and mentoring thousands of dancers. Serving alongside Nan is Associate Artistic Director Cesar G. Salinas, who happens to be a graduate of UB’s Department of Theater and Dance.
“This performance is a homecoming for Giordano Dance Chicago and UB alum Cesar Salinas. With their rich history on our stage and at Jazz Dance World Congress, we are thrilled to welcome them back,” said Enser. “Nobody does contemporary jazz better than GDC,” she added.
