SINGAPORE – Supplementary cards are an extension of the main credit card and allow the supplementary cardholder to make purchases or other financial transactions using a card linked to the same account.

Supplemental credit cards are a great way to share the benefits of a credit card with your family or loved ones, such as your spouse or your child aged 18 or over who may not be eligible to apply for a credit card on their own.

What is the difference between a main credit card and an additional credit card?

The primary or main cardholder is the main account holder who is solely responsible for managing the account – this includes paying the outstanding balance or any charges or fees associated with both the main and additional cards. It is important to note that the main credit card has a spending limit and this credit limit is shared with the additional credit card.

Although the additional cardholder’s name may appear on the additional card, only one statement will be sent to the primary cardholder. The statement will list all charges associated with the primary and additional cards.

Additional cardholders also have limited access to account management. While the primary cardholder has full access to account data and can make changes to the account, additional cardholders have either limited access or no access at all.

Do additional cards receive the same benefits?

Additional cardholders typically enjoy the same benefits as the primary cardholder, with the exception of one or two benefits that are exclusive to primary cardholders, such as airport lounge access privileges on some credit cards.

Generally, transactions with additional cards count towards the credit card rewards program and the minimum transaction for cashback, so you can collect rewards faster. However, the rewards are credited to the main cardholder’s account. The same applies to air miles and cashback.

Are additional cards free?

Most add-on credit cards are free or have a small annual fee. Check with your credit card issuer for more details.

Can additional cards affect your credit score?

An additional credit card does not affect the additional cardholder’s credit rating. A missed payment on the additional credit card will affect the credit rating of the primary cardholder. On-time payments will help to keep the primary cardholder’s credit rating good.
