What happens at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games?

The 1896 Summer Olympics, the first modern Olympic Games, featured a closing ceremony, but according to the Olympics, “it bore only the slightest resemblance to today’s ceremonies.”

There are several elements that are considered key components of the Olympic Closing Ceremony. First, the head of state of the host country enters the stadium along with the President of the International Olympic Committee. Then, the host country’s national anthem is played or sung while the host country’s flag is raised.

Other traditional elements include a flag parade, an athlete parade and the handover of the Olympic flag to a representative of the city that will host the Olympic Games in four years: in this case, Los Angeles.

During the closing ceremony, a few final medals will be awarded. At the end, the Olympic flame will be extinguished.

The closing ceremony is entitled “Records”. Thomas Jolly, artistic director of the at times controversial opening ceremonywill also take over the artistic direction of the closing ceremony.

“At the Stade de France, where the biggest stars of athletics and rugby sevens have competed, the moment will be solemn and emotional, but it will also be a cause for celebration,” said Tony Estanguet, President of Paris 2024. “The pressure is finally off and everyone can fully enjoy the absolutely exceptional spectacle being planned under the leadership of Thomas Jolly with the help of all the teams working on the four ceremonies of Paris 2024. Innovative, surprising and brilliant, these ceremonies already promise to be very impressive, just like ‘Records’, which has everything it takes to go down in the history of closing ceremonies.”

Who will perform at the closing ceremony in Paris?

The names of the artists have not yet been announced, but organizers previously said the Stade de France will be transformed into a huge concert hall, with more than 100 artists, acrobats, dancers and circus performers set to perform.

Organizers said “world-renowned singers will complete the picture,” with part of the show taking place in the air.

“We want to celebrate, but consciously. This moment of celebration will also be an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of the Olympic Games in our society,” Jolly said earlier. “That’s why I designed a show in which the Olympic Games disappear once again and someone comes and establishes them. It’s a very visual, very choreographic, very acrobatic show with an operatic dimension to offer a great visual fresco and to say goodbye to athletes from all over the world.”
