Wayne Rooney is branded ‘worst manager ever’ as Plymouth head coach endures nightmarish start to new job

Football fans have criticised Wayne Rooney after the new Plymouth boss made a nightmare start as manager of the club.

The 38-year-old was appointed as a replacement for Ian Foster, who was relieved of his duties in April this summer after managing just one win in 12 games.

Wednesday star Jamal Lowe, who joined from Bournemouth in the summer after loan spells at QPR and Swansea, put his team ahead in the 35th minute.

The striker converted from close range after good work by Svante Ingelsson.

Lowe was also involved in the second goal of Wednesday’s game.

The striker headed the ball in front of goal, but it unfortunately hit the head of Plymouth star Brendan Galloway and flew into the net, resulting in an own goal. Josh Windass and Michael Smith then scored the decisive goal shortly before the end.

Rooney never recovered from his poor start as Birmingham manager.

Fans have now sharply attacked the Manchester United and Everton icon on social media. Many are questioning his qualifications as a coach after the catastrophic defeat.

“I feel sorry for Plymouth, they deserve better than a PE teacher like Wayne Rooney. He is the worst manager ever and even worse than Steven Gerrard or Frank Lampard,” said one user.

A second commented: “Rooney is perhaps one of the worst coaches of all time…”

Another fan said: “Rooney has to go down as one of the worst managers in EFL history. 3 clubs, 3 relegations and a good chance of making it 4 out of 4.”

A fourth said: “Wayne Rooney is the worst manager in the EFL and probably the National League. Absolute GARBAGE.”

A fifth commented: “How does Rooney get another job as manager? He’s awful.”

And a sixth said: “I wonder how long Rooney will stay at Plymouth this season. They were awful in that game.”

Rooney insists he is capable of making a big impression at Plymouth.

However, these findings suggest that there is still a lot of work to be done to make this happen.

Speaking to the Daily Mail ahead of his opening game, Rooney stressed that he was willing to “think outside the box” to keep Plymouth in the Championship.

“When you work in football, you always have setbacks in this profession,” he said.

“But I want to do a great job in this role. Whatever happens, I don’t want anyone to ever doubt my work ethic or my willingness to try unconventional things.”

When asked if he was under pressure, Rooney made it clear that he was unfazed.

“I’ve had that since I was 16 – when I joined the Everton first team, played for England and went to Manchester United,” he said.

He added: “My job is to take the pressure off the players, let them play freely and try to win games. Pressure for me? That’s not an issue.”
