The Director General of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Abimbola Akinajo, announced at the weekend that passengers on the Blue Line will now reach Mile 12 and Marina in about 18 minutes, instead of the previous 25 minutes.

She said commuters could plan their trips so that a train would run every 18 minutes in each direction.

In a BusinessDay report, she said:

“The new train schedule is expected to reduce journey times, encourage more passengers to use the train system outside of peak hours and reduce transport costs. The new schedules are available on the LAMATA website, at stations and on our social media channels.”

Since its opening on September 4, 2023, the Blue Line has carried approximately 2 million passengers.

The reason for this is the suspension of subway operations on Saturdays and Sundays.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had suspended train operations to increase the number of trips from 12 to 54 and ensure the safety of passengers.

Sanwo-Olu said the target for the Blue Line (Marina to Mile 2) of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) was 74 trips by the end of November.

Legit.ng reported that a captivating TikTok video showed the joy and excitement of some Lagos residents as they boarded the newly opened blue tram for the first time.

In the clip, you can see them sitting comfortably in the spacious and modern carriages and having an animated conversation about how the rail service has changed their daily travel.

They stressed that the journey was faster and more comfortable than buses, but also safer as it allowed them to avoid the threat of street gangsters, known as agberos, who demand money from drivers.
