Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth suffers a wardrobe malfunction as fans say in disbelief: “Are my eyes deceiving me?”

An embarrassing wardrobe malfunction further compounded Wayne Rooney’s dismal first appearance as manager of Plymouth Argyle.

The Manchester United and England legend took charge of his first competitive game as Argyle’s new head coach on Sunday and watched his team suffer a devastating 4-0 defeat by Sheffield Wednesday.

The shocking result was not the only negative result of the day, however, as fans noticed a major error on some of the Plymouth players’ shirts.

Incredibly, two Pilgrims stars had written their names INCORRECT on the back of her shirt.

Both Adam Forshaw and Ibrahim Cissoko fell victim to this embarrassing mistake.

Forshaw’s name was written with an unnecessary letter E as “FORESHAW”, while Cissoko’s shirt was missing a letter.

The Dutch winger wore a jersey with the words “ISSOKO” printed on it.

Fans couldn’t believe what they saw and reacted to the faux pas on social media.

One wrote: “Things had to go bad for Plymouth if two of the names on their players’ shirts were misspelled. Their own players, man.”

And another added: “Not only are Plymouth awful, they spelled Adam Forshaw’s name wrong on his jersey!”

A third asked: “Am my eyes deceiving me… Adam Forshaw’s shirt has the word Foreshaw written on it?”

A fourth joked: “‘Foreshaw’ and ‘Issoko’ and the kit man are still not among the five worst performers of the day.”

And a fifth complained: “Who is actually responsible for the spelling and the jersey printing?? Absolute disgrace… and the result too!!!”

There was another embarrassment on the pitch for Rooney’s Plymouth team: a bizarre own goal by Brendan Galloway gave Sheffield Wednesday a two-goal lead.

Rooney was not deterred by his team’s subpar performance at the end and admitted that the result was deserved.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “The result was deserved. From my point of view, the really disappointing thing was the fundamentals of the game, winning challenges and preventing crosses.”

“We conceded four goals from four crosses. The basic structure of the game was not right.”

“What really disappoints me is that we as a team have not played with the confidence that we have shown in recent weeks.

“We didn’t control the ball well enough and didn’t control the crowd early enough. We allowed them to get a foothold in the game, let it run out and conceded two more goals.”

“I am disappointed and angry because this is not the performance I wanted to see. We talked about their danger in crosses.

“We talked about Barry Bannan and let him dictate the game and didn’t get close enough to him. That was not acceptable.”

“Players have to earn the right to play. You can lose football games, that happens, but you want to see your players running, working and tackling in a certain way.

“Many of our fans had travelled a long way, but our performance was not good enough.

“We have to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
