Deadpool and Wolverine missed the opportunity for an even better Ben Affleck Daredevil reference

Summary

  • Deadpool & Wolverine missed an opportunity to reference Ben’s Daredevil, but incorporated Garner’s Elektra.
  • The film could have made fun of Favreau’s role as Daredevil, which symbolizes his path and success in the MCU.
  • Jon Favreau’s cameo appearance as “Happy Hogan” in Deadpool & Wolverine had a deeper meaning as he promoted Deadpool to the Avengers.

Deadpool and Wolverine has a great reference to Ben Affleck’s Daredevilbut it missed the chance to make an even better one. Affleck’s Matt Murdock was a possible cameo that many Marvel viewers thought would have been in Deadpool 3. Although he does not appear in the film, Jennifer Garner’s Elektra has a prominent role. Garner first played the role in 2003 alongside Affleck in Daredevilwhere the two demonstrated their romantic chemistry amidst a hilarious argument on a playground. Deadpool and Wolverine also references their real-life divorce when Elektra reacts indifferently to Daredevil’s death.

The trained assassin also had her own film in 2005, but it was a disastrous flop with critics and at the box office. It was great to see Garner’s Elektra find redemption while also ending the chaotic Daredevil And Electra Films of the early 2000s. Deadpool and Wolverine missed another nod to those films with its cameo appearance by Happy Hogan. Jon Favreau has a surprising connection to the Fox universe that many viewers don’t remember, and the film had a golden opportunity to joke about it.

Foggy and Matt Murdock walk through a courthouse in Daredevil (2003)

Favreau’s Marvel journey began five years before 2008 Iron-Man when he played the role of Franklin “Foggy” Nelson, Matt’s best friend and partner in the legal department, in Daredevil. Foggy does not play a major role in the film, but He provides much of the comedy and heart of the film and shows what he would bring to the MCU as Happy HoganIn the MCU, Foggy is portrayed by Elden Henson, who reprises the role from the Netflix series.

While most viewers do not remember that Favreau was in Daredevil, Deadpool and Wolverine missed a great opportunity to reference his role at Fox. During their meeting, Deadpool could have said he looked familiar, or asked if he was Tony Stark’s lawyer and not his head of security. Chris Evans’ appearance on Johnny Storm was a crossover moment between the MCU and Fox universes, and Favreau’s cameo could have been a similar bridge between the two worlds.

Happy Hogan’s position as recruiter for the Avengers is symbolic of Favreau’s MCU role

Happy Hogan’s cameo appearance Deadpool and Wolverine is mostly comedic. Deadpool obviously wanted to talk to Tony Stark and even made some condescending remarks about Hogan’s role in the Avengers. However, Favreau’s appearance is more symbolic than just a funny sequence. Favreau directed the first Iron-Manand the success of the film was crucial for the beginnings of the MCU. While Kevin Feige is the father of the MCU, He relied on creative talent to bring it to life, and Favreau was the right man for the job.

Favreau interviewing Deadpool to join the Avengers seems like the right decision, as he was part of the launch of the MCU and Hogan knows what it takes to be a hero. He worked for Tony Stark for many years and saw Tony develop from a selfish billionaire playboy to a brave hero who sacrificed himself to save the world. Favreau started this character arc with the first Iron-Manand it is interesting to see how he evaluates Deadpool. His role shows that the team behind Deadpool and Wolverine wanted cameos that had meaning and served a purpose.
