Will there be a spin-off series to “The Umbrella Academy”?

The Hargreeves family was seen on our screens for the last time in the finale of the popular Netflix series The Umbrella Academywhich was released on the streaming service on August 8, 2024. With the final episode, “End of the Beginning,” the series concluded its fourth and final season with a heartbreaking narrative that found the siblings at their most vulnerable, ending the series’ five-year run; at least for now. Showrunner Steve Blackman has the potential to expand the universe of The Umbrella Academywith the actors of the show and the creator of the source material, Gerard Wayon board.

An adaptation of Way’s comic series, illustrated by Gabriel Ba, The Umbrella Academy follows an unconventional group of adopted siblings who, in the shadow of an impending apocalypse, try to find out the cause of their father’s death. The Hargreeves siblings consist of Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Diego (David Castaneda), Luther (Tom Hopper), Victor (Elliot Page), Five (Aidan Gallagher), Klaus (Robert Sheehan) and Ben (Justin H. Min), with purple (Ritu Arya) later joined the fray. The fourth and final season was controversial among fans and critics alike and received a Tomatometer score of 61% on Rotten tomatoeswhich is a huge difference from the previous season of the show, which scored 91% on the site.

What do we know about the future of the Umbrella Academy?

Talk to Radio timesShowrunner Blackman expressed his hopes for a return to the world of The Umbrella Academy. When asked if he would like to see the series return in any form, Blackman said: “Absolutely. Ultimately, it’s up to Netflix. I would do several spin-offs.” Blackman continued: “I really hope it’s not the end of The Umbrella Academyor the universe of The Umbrella Academy. I think there are many more stories to tell, including with other characters, not just with this family,” before noting that “Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, who created it, also put a lot of thought into it. So I hope this is not the end, but we’ll see.”

When discussing his possible ideas for a spin-off of The Umbrella AcademyBlackman teased, “I can definitely say there are stories at the commission, there’s some stuff with Hazel and Cha Cha that are unresolved that I’d love to talk about. There’s a lot. I actually have quite a few ideas.” Discussing the emotional finale, Blackman added, “It’s so sad (to say goodbye). It’s really sad. I had such a great time with these actors and the crew and the writers, so I knew it was going to end, but I didn’t think I’d be this emotional. I remember writing the last scene of the last script, the finale, and thinking, ‘Oh, I’m never going to write these characters again.’ I had tears in my eyes.”

And Blackman is not alone in his hopes for a sequel or spin-off, as members of The Umbrella AcademyThe cast of expressed their hope to continue the story of the Hargreeves family. Arya admitted, “I’m still not done playing Lila. I love her,” and Gallagher echoed her sentiment, saying, “I agree, the characters can go in a lot of directions.” Sheehan teased, “Never say never!” before Hopper concluded, “It would have to be Steve that does it. But never say never when it comes to getting the band back together.”
