Collision in Sebastopol causes field fire; bystanders help free driver

Authorities said citizens rescued a driver from his vehicle Saturday evening after it crashed into a field in Sebastopol, burst into flames and started a fire in surrounding vegetation.

The driver suffered minor injuries, police said.

Shortly before 8:30 p.m., Sebastopol Police received several 911 calls reporting a car crash in a field along High School Road.

“Callers also reported that the vehicle caught fire immediately after the accident and the driver may still be inside,” said a post on the Sebastopol Police Department’s official Facebook page.

When officers arrived, passers-by had already helped the driver get out of the electric vehicle, police said. In addition, the flames from the crashed vehicle had caused a grass fire that spread quickly.

Sebastopol Fire Departments, as well as Gold Ridge and Rancho Adobe and Graton Fire Districts, helped extinguish the fire, which was fueled by a series of explosions believed to have been caused by the electric vehicle, the release said.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.
