“Every organization, every club needs help and volunteers to raise money and run events, and they’re hard to find. We’re doing our best to make something happen. Actually, we’re not doing too bad. We have a pretty good volunteer group in our legion, we get involved and raise money, and it’s going pretty well.”
In La Ronge, Branch 371 applied for the grant but has not yet received word on whether it is among the successful applicants. Shaune Lapworth of the La Ronge Legion said their building is older and needs repairs in many areas.
“If we had gotten the money, this particular proposal would have been for some work on the deck, because our deck is falling apart, and for handicap access at the front of the building. Because it’s a really old building, it’s not handicap accessible. It’s an old building and it needs maintenance, and the construction costs are high.”
The Meadow Lake Legion has applied for and received the full $30,000. The money will be spent primarily on replacing the flooring in their building, as well as minor renovations to their bathrooms and fire suppression system. An anonymous spokesperson for Meadow Lake Legion No. 76 said there is no way they could complete these renovations without the provincial grant.
The Battleford Legion No. 9 is one of the grant recipients, but did not receive the full $30,000. The North Battleford Legion No. 70 could not comment on whether it received any portion of the grant money awarded.
