How Stranger Things helped Joseph Quinn on A Quiet Place: Day One

Joseph Quinn spent a lot of time fighting or running away from monsters in Stranger Things, which proved to be perfect practice for A Quiet Place: Day One.

In the horror prequel, Quinn plays Eric, who teams up with Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) – and their cat Frodo – to survive in New York City when the alien invasion begins. They quickly learn that noise is deadly.

In conversation with Digital SpyNyong’o said she had forgotten “how much energy it takes to be scared all day long” since she hadn’t acted in a horror film in five years.

But for Quinn, it was still fresh in his mind from Stranger Things. “These are skills I may have picked up on a previous job. I was able to apply them here,” he noted, adding that they didn’t just have to imagine the aliens.

“We had to rely on our imagination a little bit, and then there was some pretty expert stilt work as well,” he recalled. “It was more disturbing than frightening, but you could channel it.”

Nyong’o joked that writer-director Michael Sarnoski “annoyed” her co-star by making “creature noises” into a microphone behind the camera.

“It didn’t really bother me, it was just pretty funny. He just said, ‘And grrrr,'” Quinn clarified.

Since the film takes place at the beginning of the invasion that we already saw briefly at the beginning of “A Quiet Place: Part II,” we can assume that there will be more aliens in “Day One” than in the previous films.

But that is not the only change from before.

“I guess the previous two films were pretty restrained in terms of setting, and setting it in New York obviously leaves a lot of room for maneuver,” joked Quinn.

“I think fans can expect to see the world they’re familiar with, just on a much larger scale and much quieter.”

Bring it on.

A Quiet Place: Day One will be released in UK cinemas on June 27 and in US cinemas on June 28.
