On August 12, 2023, Emanuel Navarrete defended his third championship belt at the Desert Diamon Arena in Arizona, where he had secured the vacant WBO super featherweight title six months earlier. After his first career loss against Shakur StevensonIt was Oscar Valdez’s first attempt to regain a world title. Unfortunately, the “Cowboy” was superior to him. If Valdez hadn’t been injured, the two could have met earlier. Nevertheless, the subsequent performances were not particularly encouraging for Navarrete.
In his third fight of the year on November 16, the Mexican champion faced Robson Conceicao. Although he was fortunate enough to defend his title, Navarrete narrowly managed a draw (majority decision) against the Olympic gold medalist, who is now the WBC super featherweight champion. Six months after the fight, “Vaquero” suffered his second career loss after his failed attempt to win his fourth world title.
Emanuel Navarrete is still the WBO super featherweight titleholder and thus the “super” champion. Oscar Valdez’s recent triumph over Liam Wilson made him the interim champion and thus the mandatory challenger to the “Vaquero”.
