Singapore-based telecommunications provider SingTel and mobile gaming publisher PlayPhone have launched WePlay, a mobile gaming platform for Android users, just a month and a half after signing a deal to do so.

WePlay is an alternative “app store” that uses consumer analytics to offer recommendations tailored specifically to the user’s gaming preferences and also includes a social gaming aspect that allows users to connect with one another.

“Game discovery is a big problem and current app stores don’t do it well,” said GP Singh, SingTel’s director of WePlay.

It’s currently only available to SingTel subscribers, who can download it for free from Google Play (how ironic). It will also come pre-installed on upcoming SingTel Android devices.

As part of the launch, WePlay is giving away 500 player credits for the first 100,000 downloads, so get going! The game credits are available from now until December 31, 2013 and will be given out for the first 100,000 downloads or until the offer expires, whichever is earlier. Any unclaimed credits will expire next year on February 28, 2014. Every 100 game credits are equal to S$1 or US$0.79.

WePlay currently offers 150 games for download, with another 150 in the pipeline. The platform is set to launch in the Philippines, India, Indonesia and Thailand next year, with extensive localization planned for each market.

UPDATE 17-12-2013: We have updated the article with a comment from SingTel and further details on WePlay’s expansion into the region.
