UGA Special Collections Library for free digitization of your home videos

play

Do you have old home videos from the Athens area? Would you like to have them digitized? For free?

Good news. The UGA Special Collections Library is here for you.

The library is hosting its second “Free the Tapes” event following the success of the 2023 edition.

The first edition, “Free the Tapes: Home Movie Edition,” was a celebration of home videos made by members of the Athens community.

This year’s theme is “Free the Tapes: Athens Potluck Edition” and focuses on content created in and around Athens and stored on old VHS, 8mm film, Betamax and microcassettes.

The Brown Media Archives archivists can digitize anything, the library proudly claims, and for free.

However, drop-off times must be arranged and registered in advance and the library accepts a maximum of three audiovisual media per household or family.

The Athens-Clarke County Library will accept tapes on August 20 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.), the Winterville Cultural Center will accept tapes on August 21 (11 a.m.-1 p.m.), and the UGA Special Collections Library will accept tapes on August 22 (5 p.m.-7 p.m.).

To register for a submission date, follow the link HERE.

On November 9th, there will be a special “Free the Tapes” event where digitized films will be returned.
