Andre 3000 is more universally revered than any other MC who has ever picked up a microphone. He is one of hip-hop’s greatest iconoclasts, and his tendency to do his own thing confounds and inspires in equal measure. As one half of OutKasthe is part of one of the most progressive catalogues the genre has ever seen. When his work with former partner in rhyme Big boy was a tough call, and Three Stacks decided not to continue OutKast’s legacy with a planned solo rap career. No – instead he released a progressive jazz album with experimental flute music.
But never forget, Andre 3000 knows what it’s like to be at the top of the hip-hop mountain. In a recent Interview with CRACK Magazinehe shared his thoughts on this summer’s war of words between drake And Kendrick Lamar — two of the biggest names in rap and two artists he admires
“I got a little sad at some point,” he said when asked about the much-publicized feud. “In the early rap battles, kids rapped against each other in the park. But today, it’s not just people who rap. There are people with 100 employees. They have livelihoods, empires, companies, contracts – everything can be at stake. If you have nothing to lose, then do it. But if I’ve already done it, I’m not sure if it’s even worth it anymore.”
Arguing has always been a part of hip-hop, but as Andre points out, it can be about a lot more than just an MC’s swagger and lyrical superiority. Sometimes it’s a lot bigger, a lot more personal, and a lot more sinister. It’s also worth noting that while many legends of the game had to argue with each other in their prime, rap arguments aren’t mandatory to achieve hip-hop greatness. Sometimes it’s what makes the whole world tune in to an interview where Katt Williams criticizes fellow comedians is the same thing that made K.Dot vs. Drizzy endlessly entertaining for so many. It doesn’t feel like hip-hop so much as it does the spectacle of modern pop culture.
Andre 3000 was never known for his feuds – although he did reveal that he may have written an unreleased verse or two aimed at his haters at the time. “You got feelings,” the legend admits. “When them niggas say some sophisticated shit, the lines pop right in your head.”
At this stage of his career, Andre 3000 would probably rather pick up his flute than get involved in rap feuds, but when the icon speaks his mind, we always stop and listen.
