“It’s getting better and better” – Jarell Quansah says Liverpool are “ready to tackle the season”

Jarell Quansah admits Liverpool still have to get used to their new style of play under new manager Arne Slot, but is confident they can hit the ground running.

The game will be Slot’s first competitive match as manager after arriving at Anfield this summer as Jürgen Klopp’s successor.

After Sunday’s 4-1 win over Sevilla in a friendly, centre-back Quansah believes Liverpool have already found their feet under the Dutchman.

“It won’t click immediately,” he said on the club’s official website. “He has a lot of new ideas that we have to get used to.”

“A lot of the guys obviously played under the last manager for quite a long time, so it’s a big change.

“But it will come slowly but surely. There is still a lot of work to be done on the training ground and we will continue to do so.”

“That’s what preseason training is for: building up performance, getting fit. I think everyone feels pretty fit now and we’re ready to tackle the season.”

“I find the style of play that the coach prefers very attractive. We can score some incredible goals. And hopefully it will keep getting better. That is our goal.”

Klopp spent almost nine years at Anfield before leaving the team at the end of the 2023/24 season.

He helped Quansah make his Liverpool debut in a 2-1 win at Newcastle last August and the defender quickly developed into a key cog in the Reds’ backline.

In fact, he was in such good form that he was part of Gareth Southgate’s provisional 33-man squad for the European Championships this summer.

However, this tournament and the Copa America have interrupted preparations for the coming season, as many players have only just returned for pre-season training.

That, says Quansah, is not ideal for a team that only kept a clean sheet twice in its final 16 games last season.

“The unit obviously still needs to come together and we haven’t spent many minutes together yet,” he continued. “We’re still adapting to a different style of play and things like that. I think we’re still going to keep a clean sheet and I think that’s what we need to prioritize this season.”

“Last season there were too many games where we conceded cheap goals and we can’t really start games trailing. That’s not what you need when you’re chasing a title.”

“By laying the foundations and not conceding a goal, you win leagues.”

The Premier League returns this weekend and Liverpool’s away game at newly promoted Ipswich Town will be broadcast live on TNT Sports.
