Drake Maye scores touchdowns against several Patriots rookies

FOXBOROUGH – It wasn’t the easiest day of training.

Day 13 of Patriots training camp featured multiple penalties on both sides of the ball. The errors piled up to the point where the defense had to run multiple laps, and at the end, Jerod Mayo brought the entire team together for a pep talk.

Monday’s practice was not without problems, but there were several “wow” moments for the quarterback.

It started with Drake Maye.

While the Patriots were playing competitive 7-on-7 in the red zone, the defense was pushing Maye’s unit to the limit. The rookie’s first attempt was blocked by Christian Gonzalez. The second pass landed incompletely with Jalen Reagor in the corner of the end zone.

Then the number 3 overall pick came into play.

On the next replay, Maye threw a perfect strike that put the ball in an ever-shrinking window of opportunity and took it to rookie Javon Baker for a 10-yard touchdown. He followed with a similar throw, this time to rookie tight end Jaheim Bell, for another 10-yard touchdown.

Maye finished Monday’s practice with 8 of 14 passes completed. He completed 5 of 8 in full-team drills and finished with a touchdown to freshman Ja’Lynn Polk.

“Great guy. Great player. Great teammate,” Polk said of Maye. “He comes in with energy and smiles every day. He comes in prepared and critical about all the details he has. I’m happy for him.”

Jacoby Brissett also finished the game 8 of 14 overall. The veteran quarterback hit 6 of 9 in 11-on-11 games and 2 of 5 in the one 7-on-7 period.

Brissett also scored a spectacular touchdown when he connected with Reagor in the corner of the end zone. The veteran threw a perfect pass and Reagor beat Gonzalez to score the long touchdown.

Joe Milton III was 1 of 5 interceptions on Monday. His only successful pass was a standout pass to Polk, who made an incredible diving catch over a defensive back.

Bailey Zappe did not play quarterback on Monday.

The Patriots return to joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.
