Georgia Tech beats Florida State and Ohio State in battle for five-star OT Josh Petty

Georgia Tech just landed one of the biggest commitments in program history.

While things seemed to be going in the Yellow Jackets’ favor, it became official today when five-star offensive tackle Josh Petty committed to Georiga Tech, giving them their biggest win in the modern recruiting era.

Things had heated up in recent weeks after it appeared that Petty would transfer to Florida State. Several recruiting experts had predicted in May and June that Petty would end up in Tallahassee, and it looked like he would join the defending ACC champions. However, Brent Key and his staff continued to court Petty heavily, and in the end, he decided to play in Atlanta.

This is a huge win for Georgia Tech. Key has improved this program’s recruiting since taking over as head coach, but this win of this nature is a whole different story. The Yellow Jackets have not been able to sign players of this caliber and this could be a sign that things are changing on The Flats. This program has a lot of momentum right now after a successful first season under Brent Key and the trend continues upward.

According to 247Sports, Petty is the 14th-ranked prospect in the country, the 2nd-ranked offensive tackle in the country, and the 4th-ranked prospect in the state of Georgia. Petty plays at Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, GA. He is one of the top prospects in the country and will be getting a player that is ready to step right in and compete for playing time for the Yellow Jackets next year.

Here is the scouting report on Petty from 247Sports analyst Gabe Brooks. Brooks compares Petty to Tristan Wirfs, a former first-round pick out of Iowa:

“High-level offensive tackle who also has potential as a P5 defensive lineman. Height/length not confirmed but looks good on the hoof. Relatively lean with plenty of room in the body to bulk up. Full-time two-way snaps that impress on both sides of the ball. Faster off the ball on offense than on defense but shows surprising linear terminal speed in pursuit. Georgia 2A state wrestling champion in the 285-pound weight class as a sophomore. Wrestling talent translates into body control and close-quarter strength. Can get more powerful but plays furiously and finishes blocks. The meanness is evident. Motivated drive blocker who also moves up to the second level relatively easily. Very young for the 2025 cycle. Naturally high center of gravity but aware he can use leverage when firing and attacking defenders. Needs a more consistent level of Pass-pro ability, but functional athleticism suggests plenty of upside. Will see a significant jump in competition as he moves from lower-level high school ball to the high-major level, but consistent dominance at multiple positions is promising. Ideally, verified information/data will be available by spring 2024. Athletic profile and on-field results suggest tremendous development potential, even without a full set of data. Could become a multi-year starter at the high major level, with potential for the early rounds of the NFL Draft, especially if measurements are right.”

There could be more good news coming soon for Georgia Tech. Last night, four-star defensive tackle Christian Garrett decommitted from Georgia and is already being predicted to end up at Georgia Tech.

However, it is important to remember that predictions can be wrong and until Garrett actually commits and signs with Georgia Tech, anything can happen. However, the Yellow Jackets seem to have a lot of momentum right now and things seem to be heading in the right direction.

Here is some more information on Garrett from All Yellow Jackets recruiting analyst Najeh Wilkins:

“Garrett has continued to improve each year he has played for the Wolverines program. He finished his sophomore season with 56 tackles, seven quarterback hurries, five sacks and three tackles for loss.

He improved on those numbers in his junior season, finishing with 86 tackles, 15 quarterback hurries, nine tackles for loss and five sacks, according to MaxPreps. He is a two-time state champion with the Prince Avenue Wolverines, one of the best teams in the state. On the Wolverines’ way to the state championship, Garrett had a monster game in the semifinals against Bryan County. In that game, he had 10 tackles (season high) and two tackles for loss (season high).

The exciting thing about Garrett is that he played his best football late in the season. I mentioned his dominant game against Bryan County, but he also caused havoc and was a pain to the quarterback. Garrett had a sack in three of the last five games of the season and recorded five or more tackles in every game during the postseason.

According to the 247Sports Composite, he is the No. 138 player nationally, the No. 17 defensive player and the No. 17 player in the state of Georgia.

Garrett is a promising player who is a force in the running game and knows how to clog up running lanes and make life difficult for opposing ball carriers. He is also great at creating pressure inside and making the pocket uncomfortable for quarterbacks.”
