Ford offers free home charging of electric vehicles to some Texas residents – the first offer of its kind

Ford and TXU Energy, one of the largest electric utilities in Texas, have joined forces to enable customers Free home electric vehicle charging. Owners of newer Ford electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids who enroll in TXU’s Free EV Miles program can receive a full credit on their electric bill when they charge during TXU’s free 18-hour period.

In a press release, Ford explains that the goal is to “educate Texans about the benefits of driving electric.” The “unique” offer will encourage customers to charge during off-peak hours. Free hours will be between 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. the next day. (Charging at other times costs the same as any other use of household electricity.)

In an email to The edgeFord PR spokesman Eddie Fernandez wrote that the program is “planned for now through 2026 and is expected to continue.” The program is currently exclusive to Ford customers, but could be expanded to other automakers in the future, according to Fernandez, who also confirmed that Lincoln plug-in hybrids are included in the offering.

To receive the free charging offer, you must grant TXU access to your Ford plug-in vehicle’s charging information through the My Ford Pass app, which then connects to the electricity provider’s billing system.

If you own a Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, Escape PHEV or plug-in Lincoln (model year 2021 or newer) and also live in a Texas county covered by TXU, you can sign up on the electric provider’s website. As a bonus, Ford will also send you a $100 rewards card immediately, while TXU will give you $250 on the anniversary of your plan.
