The Google Home app is being fundamentally redesigned

Just days after announcing the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Google is making changes to the Google Home app. As first noted by Android Police, this will change the way users interact with their compatible devices..

The updated app, part of Google Home Public Preview version 3.20.1.8, has been revamped, including the thermostat controls and general UI. The update also moves the Nest app and Energy Dashboard icons below the main thermostat controls. They now look like pills. The settings gear and overflow menu remain at the top of the app, meanwhile.

At the bottom of the app, users will find content such as “time to” desired temperature, modes, humidity, fan control, and more.

As Android Police also explains, the update now lets you adjust your thermostat’s temperature settings via the Favorites menu. Previously, thermostat settings within Favorites could be accessed via a chip that opened the full thermostat control panel when tapped.

We’re still determining the exact release date of the Google Home app update for download on the Google Play Store, but it’s worth noting that the new Nest Learning Thermostat is set to begin shipping on August 20, so the app update will likely be available to everyone around that time.

The fourth Nest Learning Thermostat is being released 13 years after the original version. The latest model is designed to “look like a work of art,” as Google describes it. The thermostat is 3.9 inches in diameter and 1.1 inches thick. There is a 2.7-inch LCD screen on the front.
