Free private well water testing begins in Eastern Carolina counties

EASTERN CAROLINA, NC (WITN) – Following the impacts of Tropical Storm Debby, health officials across Eastern Carolina are working together to offer free private well testing to the public.

According to Kyla Drewry, a doctoral student at Northeastern University, the average price for a well test at a private lab is $100. In Craven, Pamlico and Beaufort counties, residents now have the option to get a free test, as this is a great opportunity for well users to check their water quality after heavy rains.

Northeastern University, along with the health and human services departments of Craven, Pamlico and Beaufort counties, is offering free well water testing for private well users. From August 12-16, private well users can obtain a test kit at certain locations. Water samples will be tested for bacteria and metals such as lead and arsenic.

Drewry thought these tests were part of her dissertation. She says unlike tap water, private wells are an unregulated water source and the responsibility for maintaining water quality lies with users.

She hopes this free test can ease some of that burden. “A water test is a great way to make sure the quality of your water hasn’t been affected by something like a flood. If you don’t get tested, your water may look OK, may smell OK, but there may be contaminants you don’t know about.”

According to Drewry, any resident with a private well can participate. You do not have to live in the communities where collection points are available.

There are a limited number of kits and they will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. The results of the water quality test will then be sent to residents via email and post.

Collection of sample bottles from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at:

Craven: 2818 Neuse Boulevard New Bern, NC 28561 or 508 US HWY 70 Havelock, NC 28532

Beaufort: 1436 Highland Drive Washington, NC 27889 or 220 N Market Street Washington, NC 27889

Pamlico: 203 North Street Bayboro, NC 28515

All samples must be picked up and returned to the designated locations between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the morning of August 20 in Pamlico and August 21 in Craven and Beaufort.
