LANSING, Michigan (WILX) – A former U.S. Postal Service employee was convicted Monday of stealing discount cards from her delivery route.
The investigation began in 2022 when Menards contacted the Postal Service after a customer reported they never received an expected discount card. Agents found that the card had been redeemed for merchandise at Menards’ Lansing South store and discovered that the customer had redeemed two other discount cards at the same time. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan, all three cards were addressed to people along Jacqueline M. Garrow’s assigned delivery routes. Video footage showed that the 50-year-old mail carrier was the one redeeming the discounts.
When confronted, Garrow confessed, and the government agreed to her request for a two-year suspended sentence. Garrow must also compensate customers whose cards were stolen.
“This verdict is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the USPS-OIG Special Agents working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office on this mail theft investigation,” said Special Agent in Charge Dennus Bishop of the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General, Central Area Field Office. “The majority of postal employees are hard-working public servants who are dedicated to ensuring that mail gets to its proper destination. The USPS-OIG, along with our law enforcement partners, remains committed to protecting the U.S. Mail and ensuring the accountability and integrity of U.S. Postal Service employees.”
“Offenses like this undermine the public’s trust in the U.S. postal system,” said U.S. Attorney Totten. “The conviction in this case sends a strong deterrent message to anyone who might unlawfully interfere with the postal system.”
