Traverse City asks for local donations as construction continues on senior center

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Michigan (WPBN/WGTU) — The dream of a new and improved senior center in Traverse City will soon become a reality.

“I know of no other senior center in the state of Michigan that would offer seniors what this building offers,” Michelle Hunt, director of Traverse City’s Parks and Recreation Department, said in a statement.

After years of planning and fundraising, construction work on a new senior citizens’ center began in September last year and is now half completed.

Environment Architects, a local firm working on the building, said people should be excited but asked for patience before taking a closer look.

“Soon you’ll see parking and things will start to come together and the building will look more complete than it probably is,” said Ray Kendra, principal architect at Environment Architects.

“That’s why we’re asking the public not to enter the property yet,” Kendra said.

Environment Architects expects the building to be completed by December 31, and the city is confident the wait will be worth it.

“I think when seniors come here for the first time, they will understand that this building has so much more to offer than ever before,” Hunt said.

The city is asking for donations for namings in the building and on the grounds.
