OMAHA, Nebraska (WOWT) – 6 News Daybreak has the headlines you need to know to start your Tuesday.

Hearing on Mayor Stothert’s budget

The Omaha City Council will hold a public hearing on Stothert’s 2025 budget proposal Tuesday evening.

Stothert unveiled the $531 million plan just days before the special session in Nebraska.

The plan calls for further property tax cuts, with much of the funding going to public safety—the OPD budget will increase by 5% and the OFD budget will increase by nearly 4%.

OPPD presents response to storms

OPPD may release new information regarding its response to the recent storm.

A presentation will be made at a committee meeting on Tuesday morning.

The meeting will initially be private, but will then be opened to the public.

6 News will send a reporter to the story to find out new details.

OPPD completed power restoration last Friday, but some questions remain.

Javier Fernandez, CEO of OPPD, answered questions from the public in a press conference last week.

School operations have started again

The first day of school in Nebraska City is Tuesday for grades K, 3, 6 and 9.

Papillion La Vista welcomes students in grades K-7 and 9.

Elkhorn Public, Arlington Public and Tekamah-Herman Public Schools will also begin with the 2024-2025 school year.

6. First weather alert day

The next storm risks for the Omaha metropolis are on Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday we will experience weaker thunderstorms during the morning rush hour.

The thunderstorms will then move away again on Wednesday afternoon. However, after 8 p.m., even stronger thunderstorms are possible, bringing strong winds and hail.

Latest on Nebraska’s special session

The meeting is reportedly approaching its budgeted cost.

State senators have estimated the cost to do this to be $10,000 a day, with the session beginning ten days ago.

The debate on property tax reform, a long-awaited bill by Governor Pillen, is still pending in Parliament.

The time for the end of the meeting is still unclear.

New charges pending against teenage murderer

The teenager was 13 years old when he was convicted of murdering an Omaha man in 2022.

He was placed in a rehabilitation facility from which he subsequently escaped.

There is a new arrest warrant out for him because Lancaster County wants to charge him as an adult following his escape.

The boy is now 15 years old.
