Patriots WR Javon Baker says chemistry with Drake Maye is “much better”

The New England Patriots have been busy preparing for the upcoming 2024-25 season during the final two weeks of NFL training camp, and that’s especially true for the team’s new group of rookies.

New England enters this season with a number of interesting newcomers, especially on offense. Third overall pick Drake Maye is the clear headliner, along with two young offensive linemen and wide receivers to support their rookie quarterback and build for the future.

And while we haven’t seen this newly assembled Patriots team on the field in a regular season game yet, it seems like the youth movement on the roster is already starting to take shape.

Patriots fourth-round receiver Javon Baker made this clear when he talked about his chemistry with Maye in recent practices, describing it as “much better,” although he still has a lot to learn in the future:

“It’s a lot better. Drake (Maye) and I still have a lot to learn. We just have to keep putting days together. Honestly, the whole team. We just have to keep putting days together. We’ll be fine.”

Baker, paired with second-round pick Ja’Lynn Polk, is a key weapon in the Patriots’ rebuild alongside Maye. Both wide receivers have a chance to have great first years if they meet targeting requirements, and seeing the two sides start to connect as early as August training camp bodes well for what’s to come this season.

Of course, it’s not clear when Maye will be a starter in this offense, as Jacoby Brissett is still in contention as the starting quarterback, but the sooner the UNC product starts working with Polk or Baker, the better.

Fans will have the opportunity to see Maye and Baker on the field together during the Patriots’ upcoming preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. We hope the third-round pick in the first round of the draft gets to play in more than just one drive.
