Governor Lamont: Annual sales tax-free week begins in Connecticut

CONNECTICUT – Just in time for back-to-school shopping, Connecticut’s sales tax-free week begins Sunday and lasts through Saturday, Aug. 24, Governor Ned Lamont announced this week.

During the one-week sales tax-free period, retail purchases of most clothing and footwear priced under $100 are exempt from state sales and use taxes. The exemption during the sales tax-free week applies to any eligible item priced under $100, regardless of how many of those items are sold to a customer on the same invoice, according to Lamont.

“This year’s tax-free holiday starts a little early to give families a head start for the back-to-school season, which will be here sooner than we think,” Governor Lamont said in a statement. “As always, I encourage shoppers to take the time to stop by some of Connecticut’s local businesses and support our amazing small business community.”

Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz added, “Sales tax-free week is a great opportunity for Connecticut families to prepare for back-to-school while saving money. Parents and caregivers can save on needed clothing and everyday shoes so their children can start the school year with confidence. I hope our residents will take advantage of these savings and shop at their local convenience stores so these dollars can be reinvested in their communities.”

Mark Boughton, commissioner of the Department of Revenue Services, said the sales tax-free week is a great way for Connecticut residents to save money.

“In fact, many retailers are offering additional discounts, which can save even more. I encourage people to get out and support local businesses,” Boughton said.
